GO IT ALONE!

The list of ASP resources at the back of this book is a small fraction of what’s available, while the larger array of ASPs listed at the Web site for this book (www.BruceJudson.com) still don’t capture the full magnitude of what’s available. Each day seems to bring multiple announcements of new services or sophisticated improvements to existing services that will help boost the productivity of go-it-alone businesses. This suggests that we haven’t seen anything yet.

Amazon.com, eBay, Google, & Yahoo!

In closing this discussion of ASPs, it’s worth noting that the four companies that are arguably the most successful Internet businesses all operate a range of ASP services designed to support go-it-alone entrepreneurs. In many cases, the ASP services operated by Amazon.com, eBay, Google, and Yahoo! provide the basic infrastructure that makes it possible for many go-it-alone businesses to exist.

A portion of the activities of these companies include:

  • eBay auction services, which support hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs.

  • Google AdWords, which provides highly targeted pay-per-click advertising, and allows even the smallest businesses to reach a nationwide or worldwide audience within a few minutes of enrolling.

  • Google AdSense, which allows entrepreneurs to easily generate advertising revenues from their online content.

  • Yahoo! Merchant Solutions, which provides sophisticated e-commerce services to start-up businesses.

  • Overture Precision Match (owned by Yahoo!), which also provides easy-to-use targeted pay-per-click advertising to start-up firms.
